The Pontifical Institute's Summer School returns this year with an expanded
programme. In addition to the four-week course in Latin Palaeography that
is the centrepiece of the PIMS Summer School, two week-long courses will be
offered: Mediaeval Latin for Palaeographers and a workshop on Codicology. The
programme is taught by M. Michèle Mulchahey,
Leonard E. Boyle Professor of
Manuscript Studies at the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies,
and by Dr Greti Dinkova-Bruun, Associate Fellow of the Institute. A flyer describing the programme
is also available as a PDF file.
Summer School in Latin Palaeography • 1–25 June 2010
Latin Palaeography is a four-week intensive introduction to mediaeval
handwriting in the Latin West from the late Roman period until the dawn of
print. It is designed for those who wish to acquire the skills that will enable
them to work with unpublished Latin manuscript materials from the mediaeval period,
whether as researchers or as librarians and collectors who have an interest
in manuscripts, rare books, and mediaeval documentary survivals. Students
will be introduced to all the main mediaeval systems of abbreviation, along
with the principles of transcription, through daily exercises in identifying,
dating, and transcribing various scripts. Scribal practices and the basics of
mediaeval manuscript production will also be considered, as the context within
which palaeographical developments occurred. The Institute's own collection of
mediaeval manuscripts and diplomata will be used to illustrate what is taught in class.
Prerequisite Reading knowledge of Latin is essential and will be assumed

Medieval Latin for Palaeographers • 24–28 May 2010
Medieval Latin for Palaeographers is a one-week review designed for those who would
like a quick refresher course, as well as for those who are well-versed in Classical Latin,
but would benefit from an overview of the characteristics that distinguish mediaeval Latin from its
Classical form. Reading and translation exercises will form a central part of the course.
Medieval orthography and syntax, as well as other aspects of mediaeval Latin
that are useful in the study of palaeography, will also be emphasized.

Mediaeval Manuscripts at PIMS: A Workshop in Codicology • 28 June–2 July 2010
Mediaeval Manuscripts at PIMS: A Workshop in Codicology is intended as a brief
introduction to codicology, with the Pontifical Institute's own mediaeval
manuscripts providing a hands-on experience for participants. The physical
make-up of manuscripts will be considered, as well as the evolution of methods
of production, from those used in the monastic scriptoria to the techniques of
reproduction developed at the medieval universities. The basics of codicological
description will be covered, and students will also be shown the ways in which
codicological investigations can add context and precision to textual analyses.
